The man said, “From now on, your name will no longer be Jacob. You will be called Israel, because you have wrestled with God and with men, and you have won.”
and the muscle on his hip joint had been injured. That's why even today the people of Israel don't eat the hip muscle of any animal.
then he set up his tents and built an altar there to honor the God of Israel.
Jacob, also known as Israel, traveled to the south of Eder Tower, where he set up camp.
Before there were kings in Israel, the following kings ruled Edom one after another:
The people of Israel made their home in the land of Goshen, where they became prosperous and had large families.
Jacob told him that in the future the people of Israel would ask God's blessings on one another by saying, “I pray for God to bless you as much as he blessed Ephraim and Manasseh.” Jacob put Ephraim's name first to show that he would be greater than Manasseh.
Jacob called his sons together and said: My sons, I am Jacob, your father Israel.
Now I place a curse on you because of your fierce anger. Your descendants will be scattered among the tribes of Israel.
Dan, that will bring justice to Israel.
These are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is how Jacob gave each of them their proper blessings.
the people of Israel became so numerous that the whole region of Goshen was full of them.
The Egyptians put slave bosses in charge of the people of Israel and tried to wear them down with hard work. Those bosses forced them to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses, where the king could store his supplies.
that their lives were miserable. The Egyptians were cruel to the people of Israel and forced them to make bricks and to mix mortar and to work in the fields.
Moses answered, “I will tell the people of Israel that the God their ancestors worshiped has sent me to them. But what should I say, if they ask me your name?”
Call together the leaders of Israel and tell them that the God who was worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has appeared to you. Tell them I have seen how terribly they are being treated in Egypt,
The leaders of Israel will listen to you. Then you must take them to the king of Egypt and say, “The Lord
Then tell him that I have said, “Israel is my first-born son,
Later they brought together the leaders of Israel,
Now I have seen how the people of Israel are suffering because of the Egyptians, and I will keep my promise.

O Children of Israel! call to mind the (special) favor which I bestowed upon you, and fulfilll your Covenant with Me as I fulfill My Covenant with you, and fear none but Me.
O Children of Israel! call to mind the (special) favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you to all others (for My Message).
And remember We took a Covenant from the Children of Israel (to this effect): worship none but Allah; treat with kindness your parents and kindred, and orphans and those in need; speak fair to the people; be steadfast in prayer; and practice regular charity. Then you turned back, except a few among you, and you backslide (even now).
O Children of Israel! call to mind the special favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you to all others (for My Message).
Ask the Children of Israel how many Clear (Signs) We have sent them. But if any one, after Allah's favor has come to him, substitutes (something else), Allah is strict in punishment.
Have you not turned your vision to the Chiefs of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Moses? They said to a Prophet (that was) among them: ''Appoint for us a King, that we may fight in the cause of Allah.'' He said: ''Is it not possible, if you were commanded to fight, that you will not fight?'' They said: ''How could we refuse to fight in the cause of Allah, seeing that we were turned out of our homes and our families?'' But when they were commanded to fight, they turned back, except a small band among them. But Allah has full knowledge of those who do wrong.
''And (appoint him) a Messenger to the Children of Israel, (with this message): ''`I have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah's leave: and I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by Allah's leave; and I declare to you what you eat, and what you store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if you did believe;
All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Israel made unlawful for itself, before the Law (of Moses) was revealed. Say: ''You bring the Law and study it, if you be men of truth.''
Allah took (aforetime) a Covenant from the Children of Israel, and We appointed twelve captains among them. And Allah said: ''I am with you: if you (but) establish regular Prayers, practice regular Charity, believe in My Messengers, honor and assist them, and loan to Allah a beautiful loan, verily I will wipe out from you your evils, and admit you to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath; but if any of you, after this, resists faith, he has truly wandered from the path of rectitude.''
On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our Messengers with Clear Signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.
We took the Covenant of the Children of Israel and sent them Messengers. Every time there came to them a Messenger with what they themselves did not desire - some (of these) they called impostors, and some they (go so far as to) slay.
They do blaspheme who say: ''God is Christ the son of Mary.'' But Christ said: ''O Children of Israel! worship God, my Lord and your Lord.'' Whoever joins other gods with Allah, - Allah will forbid him the Garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help.
Curses were pronounced on those among the Children of Israel who rejected Faith, by the tongue of David and of Jesus the son of Mary: because they disobeyed and persisted in Excesses.
Then will Allah say: ''O Jesus the son of Mary! recount My favor to you and to your mother. Behold! I strengthened you with the holy spirit, so that you spoke to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught you the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel. And behold! you made out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and you breathed into it, and it became a bird by My leave, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! you brought forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) you when you showed them the Clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: `This is nothing but evident magic.'
One for whom it is right to say nothing but truth about Allah. Now I have come to you (people), from your Lord, with a clear (Sign): so let the Children of Israel depart along with me.''
Every time the Penalty fell on them, they said: ''O Moses! on our behalf call on your Lord in virtue of His promise to you: if you will remove the Penalty from us, we shall truly believe in you, and we shall send away the Children of Israel with you.''
And We made a people, considered weak (and of no account), inheritors of lands in both East and West, - lands whereon We sent down Our blessings. The fair promise of your Lord was fulfillled for the Children of Israel, because they had patience and constancy, and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride).
We took the Children of Israel (with safety) across the sea. They came upon a people devoted entirely to some idols they had. They said: ''O Moses! fashion for us a god like the gods they have.'' He said: ''Surely you are a people without knowledge.
We took the Children of Israel across the sea; Pharaoh and his hosts followed them in insolence and spite. At length, when overwhelmed with the flood, he said: ''I believe that there is no god except Him Whom the Children of Israel believe in: I am of those who submit (to Allah in Islam).''
We settled the Children of Israel in a beautiful dwelling-place, and provided for them sustenance of the best: it was after knowledge had been granted to them, that they fell into schisms. Verily Allah will judge between them as to the schisms amongst them, on the Day of Judgment.
