David and Solomon

  k&B

These two kings of Israel have an important role in both books. David is famous because, while still a youth, he slew the ‘giant’ Goliath, using only a simple sling and stone. Later, Allah helped him to manufacture iron armour. However, he was not just a great warrior, but also a king and musician.

Originally a simple shepherd boy, David succeeded King Saul on his death.

The Bible attributs to David many psalms, in which he praised the Lord but also expressed deep despair. The Qur’an cites the Psalms or Zabur which Allah gave to David. The Arabic word ‘zabur’ means a text written on wood or stone. The Arabic text also mentions the ‘Mazamiru Dawud’. In Arabic ‘zamir(un) is the equivalent of ‘zimra’ in Hebrew which means singing, music or songs. The Qur’an prizes David’s sense of guilt: repentance is becoming to a king. The Qur’an also stresses the jubilant side of David. In both books, the mountains and the birds share his song of exuberance and joy.

Solomon inherited his father David’s wisdom as well as his kingdom. He was also a sovereign with a sense of guilt and was ready to show repentance for his lapses. Allah bestowed special powers on Solomon. He could understand the language of the animals. Surah 27 is named after a story about ants, which warned each other so as not be trampled on by Solomon’s army. The king also had power over the forces of nature, and over Satans and Jinns (spirits) which he was able to make use of to achieve major objectives, such as the laying out of beautiful gardens. Solomon is similarly famous in the Bible for his prowess as a builder, which had its zenith in the temple in Jerusalem.

It is not possible here to go into all the elaborate stories about the two kings in the Qur’an and the Bible. However, the meeting with the Queen of Sheba is too fascinating to miss. Intrigued by all the stories of the Israeli king’s wisdom and the pomp and luxury of his court, she travels from afar to visit him. In the Bible, the queen takes her leave, profoundly impressed by everything she has seen, and laden with princely gifts. The Queen of Sheba finally converts to the faith of Solomon, the belief in Allah, the one God.

In the Bible, the story is told in the First Book of Kings. In the Qur’an it is found in surah 27 and in surah 34, which is named after the Queen’s city Sheba.

Saul fears the giant
King Saul and the Israelite army set up camp on a hill… to fight the Philistine army that was on a hill on the other side of the valley. The Philistine army had a hero named Goliath… who was over nine feet tall... and shouted to the army of Israel: Choose your best soldier to come out and fight me! If he can kill me, our people will be your slaves. But if I kill him, your people will be our slaves. Saul and his men heard what Goliath said: but they were so frightened of Goliath that they couldn't do a thing. Your Majesty,” he (David) said: “this Philistine shouldn't turn us into cowards. I'll go out and fight him myself!” 1 Samuel 17: 2-4, 8-9, 11, 32

In his youth did he not kill a giant, and take away reproach from the people, when he lifted his hand with a stone in the sling and struck down the boasting of Goliath? Sirach 47: 4

David defeated Goliath with a sling and a rock. He killed him without even using a sword. David ran over and pulled out Goliath's sword... to cut off Goliath's head. 1 Samuel 17: 50-51

David’s guilt
I have sinned and done wrong since the day I was born. Psalm 51: 5

Please have pity on me... Please wipe away my sins. Wash me clean from all of my sin and guilt. I know about my sins, and I cannot forget my terrible guilt. You are really the oneI have sinned against; Psalm 51: 1-4

Please help the kingto be honest and fairjust like you, our God.Let him be honest and fairwith all your people, especially the poor. Psalm 72: 1-2

The Psalms
A Psalm by David
My God, my God, why have you deserted me? But I am merely a worm, far less than human, and I am hated and rejected by people everywhere. Brutal enemies attack me like a pack of dogs, tearing at my hands and my feet. Don't stay far away, LORD! My strength comes from you, so hurry and help. Psalm 22: 1, 6, 16, 19

I will praise you, LORD! You saved me… I prayed to you, LORD God, and you healed me, saving me from death and the grave. Psalm 30: 1-3

Shout praises to the LORD!… in the highest heavens. Sun and moon, and all of you bright stars, Let all things praise the name of the LORD, because they were created at his command. All mountains and hills, every wild and tame animal, all reptiles and birds, The glory of God is greater than heaven and earth. Psalm 148: 1 ,3, 5, 9-10,13

God's people will own the land and live here forever. Psalm 37: 29

God blesses those people who are humble. The earth will belong to them! Matthew 5: 5

King Solomon the brilliant
His son Solomon became king and took control of David's kingdom. 1 Kings 2: 12

Solomon was brilliant. God had blessed him with insight and understanding. 1 Kings 4: 29

Solomon's workers started building the temple… It had been… four hundred eighty years since the people of Israel left Egypt. The LORD's temple and Solomon's palace were now finished, and Solomon had built everything he wanted. Some time later the LORD appeared to him…The LORD said: I heard your prayer and what you asked me to do. This temple you have built is where I will be worshiped forever. It belongs to me, and I will never stop watching over it. 1 Kings 6: 1, 9:1-3

I (Solomon) said to myself: “You are by far the wisest person who has ever lived in Jerusalem. You are eager to learn, and you have learned a lot.” Ecclesiastes 1: 16

I did some great things. I built houses and planted vineyards.I had flower gardens and orchards… And I had pools where I could get water for the trees.Men and women sang for me, and I had many wives who gave me great pleasure. I was the most famous person who had ever lived in Jerusalem… Then I thought about everything I had done… and it was simply chasing the wind. Nothing on earth is worth the trouble. Ecclesiastes 2: 4-6, 8-9, 11

The Queen of Sheba

Solomon's palace took thirteen years to build. Solomon's throne was in Justice Hall, where he judged cases. 1 Kings 7: 1, 8

(Also in front of the throne was something that looked like a glass sea, clear as crystal. Revelation 4: 6)

The Queen of Sheba heard how famous Solomon was, so she went to Jerusalem to test him with difficult questions. She took along several of her officials, and she loaded her camels with gifts of spices, jewels, and gold. When she arrived, she and Solomon talked about everything she could think of. He answered every question, no matter how difficult it was. The Queen was amazed at Solomon's wisdom. She was breathless when she saw his palace… She said: “Solomon, in my own country I had heard about your wisdom and all you've done. But I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes! And there's so much I didn't hear about. You are wiser and richer than I was told.” “I praise the LORD your God. He is pleased with you and has made you king of Israel. The LORD loves Israel, so he has given them a king who will rule fairly and honestly.” The Queen of Sheba gave Solomon almost five tons of gold, many jewels, and more spices than anyone had ever brought into Israel. In return, Solomon gave her the gifts he would have given any other ruler, but he also gave her everything else she wanted. Then she and her officials went back to their own country. 1 Kings 10: 1-7, 9-13
  k&B   David slays Goliath
When Saul set forth with the armies… He and the faithful ones with him – they said: “This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces.” but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: “How oft, by Allah’s will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Allah is with those who steadfastly persevere.” When they advanced to meet Goliath and his forces, they prayed: “Our Lord! Pour out constancy on us and make our steps firm: Help us against those that reject faith.” By Allah’s will they routed them; and David slew Goliath; and Allah gave him power and wisdom and taught him whatever (else) He willed. And did not Allah Check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief: But Allah is full of bounty to all the worlds. Surah 2: 249-251

And We made the iron soft for him; -  (Commanding): “Make thou coats of mail, balancing well the rings of chain armour, and work ye righteousness.” Surah 34: 10-11

David asks forgiveness

Have patience at what they say, and remember our servant David, the man of strength: for he ever turned (to Allah). Surah 38: 17

And David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance). So We forgave him this (lapse). O David! We did indeed make thee a vice-regent on earth: so judge thou between men in truth (and justice): Nor follow thou the lusts (of thy heart), for they will mislead thee from the Path of Allah. Surah 38: 24-26

The Psalms
And it is your Lord that knoweth best all beings that are in the heavens and on earth: We did bestow on some prophets more (and other) gifts than on others: and We gave to David (the gift of) the Psalms. Surah 17: 55

We bestowed Grace aforetime on David from ourselves: “O ye Mountains! Sing ye back the Praises of Allah with him! and ye birds (also)! Surah 34: 10

...it was Our power that made the hills and the birds celebrate Our praises, with David: it was We Who did (all these things). Surah 21: 79

Before this We wrote in the Psalms, after the Message (given to Moses): “My servants the righteous, shall inherit the earth.” Surah 21: 105

Solomon was David’s heir

To David We gave Solomon (for a son) – How excellent in Our service! Ever did he turn (to Us)! Behold, there were brought before him, at eventide coursers of the highest breeding, and swift of foot; And he said: “Truly do I love the love of good, with a view to the glory of my Lord.”  And We did try Solomon: but he did turn (to Us in true devotion): He said: “O my Lord! Forgive me… Surah 38: 30-35

And Solomon was David's heir… Surah 27: 16

…and there were Jinns (spirits). that worked in front of him, by the leave of his Lord… They worked for him as he desired, (making) arches, images, basons as large as reservoirs, and (cooking) cauldrons fixed (in their places). Surah 34: 12-13

Then We subjected the wind to his power, to flow gently to his order, Whithersoever he willed – As also the evil ones, (including) every kind of builder and diver – As also others bound together in fetters. Surah 38: 36-38

And Solomon… said: “O ye people! We have been taught the speech of birds, and on us has been bestowed (a little) of all things: this is indeed Grace manifest (from Allah)” And before Solomon were marshalled his hosts – of Jinns and men and birds, and they were all kept in order and ranks. At length, when they came to a (lowly) valley of ants, one of the ants said: “O ye ants, get into your habitations, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you (under foot) without knowing it.” So he smiled, amused at her speech… Surah 27: 16-19

A woman ruling
And he took a muster of the Birds; and he said: “Why is it I see not the Hoopoe? (a desert bird) Or is he among the absentees? But the Hoopoe tarried not far: he (came up and) said: “I have come to thee from Sheba with tidings true. “I found (there) a woman ruling over them and provided with every requisite; and she has a magnificent throne. “I found her and her people worshipping the sun besides Allah. Satan has kept them away from the Path. Surah 27: 20, 22-24

(Solomon said) “Go thou, with this letter of mine, and deliver it to them: then draw back from them, and (wait to) see what answer they return”... (The queen) said: “Ye chiefs! here is delivered to me - a letter worthy of respect. “It is from Solomon, and is (as follows): 'In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful: Be ye not arrogant against me, but come to me in submission (to the true Religion).'“ Surah 27: 28-31

(She said) “But I am going to send him a present, and (wait) to see with what (answer) return (my) ambassadors.” Now when (the embassy) came to Solomon, he said: “Will ye give me abundance in wealth? But that which Allah has given me is better than that which He has given you! Nay it is ye who rejoice in your gift! Surah 27: 35-36

She was (sprung) of a people that had no faith. She was asked to enter the lofty Palace: but when she saw it, she thought it was a lake of water, and she (tucked up her skirts), uncovering her legs. He said: “This is but a palace paved smooth with slabs of glass.” She said: “O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul: I do (now) submit (in Islam), with Solomon, to the Lord of the Worlds.” Surah 27: 43-44
