Mary and Jesus

  k&B

The beautiful stories of his birth, demonstrate that Jesus is not only a major figure in the Bible but also in the Qur’an.

His mother Mary became pregnant while unmarried, quite a scandal in those days. However,  her pregnancy is a miracle. In the gospel of Luke in the Bible, the angel Gabriel announces the birth of Jesus and the holy spirit comes over her.  In the Qur’an, there is also an angelic messenger, Gabriel. As in the Gospel according to John, the explanation is quite abstract, referring to the creative power of God’s word.

In the Bible, Joseph looked after Mary and her child. In the Qur’an, the heavily pregnant Mary took herself off into the desert alone. Hovering on the brink of despair, she heard a voice – was  it the angel (Gabriel) or the newborn baby ? – giving her fresh heart. Later, when Mary returned to her family to face a barrage of criticism, the infant speaks up for her.

The two stories are beautiful and completely human, but illuminated by a divine light. One important difference is the status of Jesus in each religion. In the gospels according to John and Luke He is called the ‘son of God’.

The Qur’an emphatically rejects this. Jesus is the son of Mary, not of Allah.  Allah has no sons; even the Prophet Muhammad was not the son of Allah. The Qur’an describes Jesus as Mary’s son, a person of high moral standing  the Christ, the Masîh (Messiah). He was Allah’s prophet and the messenger of His Word. In the Bible, Jesus is the son of God,  his messenger and the Messiah, the Chirst. This last title is used in both books and derives from the Hebrew for ‘God’s anointed’, a titled reserved for a king/saviour. The Greek term used in the Acts of the Apostles in the Bible is Christos. The birth of Jesus is celebrated by Christians at Christmas.

The birth of Jesus is dealt with in surah 19, named after his mother, Mary. The biblical story can be read in the gospels.

The angel Gabriel visits Mary
…God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee with a message for a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to Joseph from the family of King David. The angel greeted Mary and said: “You are truly blessed! The Lord is with you.” Mary was confused by the angel's words and wondered what they meant. Then the angel told Mary: “Don't be afraid! God is pleased with you, and you will have a son. His name will be Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God Most High. The Lord God will make him king, as his ancestor David was. Mary asked the angel: “How can this happen? I am not married!” The angel answered: “The Holy Spirit will come down to you, and God's power will come over you. So your child will be called the holy Son of God. Nothing is impossible for God!” Mary said: “I am the Lord's servant! Let it happen as you have said.”
Luke 1: 26-32, 34-35, 37-38

In the beginning was the one who is called the Word. The Word was with God and was truly God. From the very beginning the Word was with God. And with this Word, God created all things. Nothing was made without the Word. Everything that was created received its life from him, and his life gave light to everyone. The light keeps shining in the dark… The Word became a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father… not… by nature or because of any human desires. God himself was the one… John 1: 1-5, 14, 13

The Holy family

This is how Jesus Christ was born. A young woman named Mary was engaged to Joseph from King David's family. But before they were married, she learned that she was going to have a baby by God's Holy Spirit. Joseph was a good man and did not want to embarrass Mary in front of everyone. So he decided to quietly call off the wedding. While Joseph was thinking about this, an angel from the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said: “Joseph, the baby that Mary will have is from the Holy Spirit. Go ahead and marry her. Then after her baby is born, name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” After Joseph woke up, he and Mary were soon married, just as the Lord's angel had told him to do. But they did not sleep together before her baby was born. Then Joseph named him Jesus. Matthew 1: 18-21, 24-25

Everyone had to go to their own hometown to be listed. So Joseph had to leave Nazareth… and go to Bethlehem… King David's hometown… Mary was engaged to Joseph and travelled with him to Bethlehem. She was soon going to have a baby, and while they were there, she gave birth to her first-born son. She dressed him in baby clothes and laid him on a bed of hay, because there was no room for them in the inn. That night in the fields near Bethlehem some shepherds were guarding their sheep. All at once an angel came down to them from the Lord, and the brightness of the Lord's glory flashed around them. The shepherds were frightened. But the angel said: “Don't be afraid! I have good news for you, which will make everyone happy. This very day in King David's hometown a Saviour was born for you. He is Christ the Lord. You will know who he is, because you will find him dressed in baby clothes and lying on a bed of hay.” Luke 2: 4-12
k&B   Christ Jesus promised to Mary
Relate in the Book (the Qur’an) (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East. She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent her our angel (Gabriel?), and he appeared before her as a man in all respects. She said: “I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah.” He said: “Nay, I am only a messenger from thy Lord, (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son. She said: “How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?” He said: “So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, 'that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us’: It is a matter (so) decreed.” So she conceived him (Jesus) and she retired with him to a remote place. Surah 19: 16-22

Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah. “He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. And he shall be (of the company) of the righteous.” She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man hath touched me?” He said: “Even so: Allah createth what He willeth: When He hath decreed a plan, He but saith to it, 'Be,' and it is! Surah 3: 45-47

It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! when He determines a matter, He only says to it: “Be”, and it is. Surah 19: 35

He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him. Surah 112: 3-4

Mary gives birth alone
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree (to hold tight against the pain): She cried (in her anguish): “Ah! would that I had died before this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!” But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm-tree): “Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee; “And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee. “So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man, say, 'I have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into no talk with any human being'“ Surah 19: 23-26

At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms). They said: “O Mary! truly an amazing thing hast thou brought! “O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman unchaste!” But she pointed to the babe. They said: “How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?” He (the baby Jesus) said: “I am indeed a servant of Allah. He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet; “And He hath made me blessed wheresoever I be, and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live; “(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable; “So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)”! Surah 19: 27-33

We gave Jesus the son of Mary Clear (Signs) and strengthened him with the holy spirit. Surah 2: 87

Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His apostles. Say not ´Trinity´…
Surah 4: 171
