52
Finally, the Lord was so angry with the people of Judah, that he gave orders for the kings of Babylonia to attack Jerusalem.
53
The Babylonians killed the young men who were around the temple, and they showed no mercy to anyone in the city, whether man or woman, young or old.
54
The Babylonians took all the sacred things from the temple, and they carried off the temple treasure chests, as well as everything from the personal storerooms of the king. All of this was sent back to Babylonia.
55
The Babylonians burned down the temple and the towers in the city walls, and then they broke down those walls.
56
Beautiful Jerusalem lay in ruins. The survivors were taken to Babylonia as prisoners,
57
where they were servants of the king and his sons until Persia conquered Babylonia. It was just as the Lord had told Jeremiah the prophet,
58
“The land will be deserted for 70 years, to make up for all the years it was not allowed to rest.”
